Approval Required for Trail Work at Blue River

Postby robstitt on Sun Sep 28, 2008 2:27 pm

The Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department owns the Blue River Parkway trails and they require approval for all trail routes, modifications, and signage.

As JCP&R's designated contact for the Blue River Parkway trails, they expect all of the work on the trails to be funneled through me so I can coordinate the activities and then work with them to obtain the necessary approvals.

We've got a great working relationship with them, largely based on our history of working within their rules to maintain the trail system. It's important, as a community of trail users, that we continue working to maintain this relationship.

Accordingly, I request that anyone interested in working on the trails please contact me directly (robstitt<at>acm.org). Also, if you have ideas or suggestions, please let me know. While I can't promise that I'll be able to implement all suggestions, I do consider all of them and appreciate the interest.

If anyone has any questions about this, please contact me directly (robstitt<at>acm.org).

I'm become more addicted to this thing called mountain biking. Love, some of these trail systems. So, I'm getting to the point of wanting to volunteer for trail improvements. Would love to help with Burp.

Also curious after riding the Lawrence Skills trail, what are the chances of getting a small skills trail area built?
There's a little used path/area, that if you come off down the southeast slope of the railroad bridge that would be great for this.

Blam,
You came to the right place. Check back here often, this is where most of the trailwork day annoncements will show up. Phil and Rob are the main guys at Burp, I know they have lots planned for this coming fall/winter, which are the main trail building seasons.

The skills area question.....it's a looooooonnnnnnnnggggggg story. It boils down land managers used to get nervous whenever anyone talked to them about building things to jump off of. That's finally changing, and after 6 years of lobbying, there is finally an oppertunity to build something like this at SMP. Whether or not it happens depends on if the people that really want this type of trail step up and do the work to make it happen. There are a couple of very motivated and competent guys from the freeride crowd that I think can get the job done (Shannon and Patrick), but they can't do it alone.

Like I said, stay tuned here and as things develop it will be posted.

Olathejoe,

Thanks for the response. I'm here with a buddy and we're both willing to do some work on KC Metro trail systems. Just need the advance notice and guidance when we get there.

I can help cut down the 5ft tall grass on Serengeti. I have a string trimmer.

About Serengeti....Should this trail be re-routed sometime soon? At least some sections. The ruts through the grass are to the point that you either have to ride off the singletrack (which at this point is very difficult) or risk catching a pedal on the ground and being thrown overboard.

I know that there is a lot of work to be done out there and not a lot of help lately, but I thought that I would make the suggestion, even if I can't personally make it happen by myself.

Had a good ride and rode three newbs into the dirt at BuRP. I don't feel bad about it since I am also not in great shape. :D

PS - Blam, if you send me a PM with your contact info, I can keep you up to date with trail workdays for the SMP Freeride area. The workdays are generally last minute due the weather in MOKan.

Shannon,

I've got the Serengeti on my scope. String trimmer's are worthless out there. I'm going to see about getting the DR Mower this week. I was hoping to see him at Swope today.
