MOUNTAIN BIKE PATROL TRAINING CLASS

MOUNTAIN BIKE PATROL TRAINING CLASS

Postby bohemian on Fri Jun 08, 2007 5:27 am

July 31 (Tuesday) and Aug 2 (Thursday) evenings. Exact times/location to be announced later. Expect these to take about 3-4 hours each evening. This will cover everything except for the First Aid/CPR portions of the course.

For what the patrol is/does:
http://www.earthriders.com/MMBP/ AND
http://www.imba.com/nmbp/index.html
Being active in the patrol is a blast, and also looks great on a CV/resume. All employers love community service/involvement!

COURSE INFO
Please get the FA/CPR portion done on your own, preferably prior to the main class, though not a pre-requisite for the patrol class. This much advance notice hopefully gives you time to get this done on your own. Try doing this through your employer, school, or other local community resource (some listed below). We have a lot of new interest in the patrol, and some special events coming up later this summer/fall. The 24 hours of Landahl is a cool event/race in September, and we need to have a big presence there.

Topics to be covered in this class include (brief list):
--what the patrol does
--rider safety/trail technique pointers
--rider/trail advocacy
--BRIEF First Aid/CPR (practical tips you don't learn in regular FA/CPR)
--recommended items in your patrol pack
--communication (practice your yodeling, our radios suck)
--basic maps/orienteering
--trailside mechanical quickies (a whole course in itself)

Expect these to be able to get you through the NMBP certification exam.

FA/CPR courses/links:
---of course, the mainstay-- (http://www.kcredcross.org/Training/Trai ... 9&Cat=1&~=). ARC has a plethora of courses--see what works for you.

June 15: $45, $60 w/ book and CD/DVD (http://www.localendar.com/public/kcfirstaid) This (http://www.kcfirstaid.com/) is a local Lenexa company--has lots of course choices, i.e. with/without AED, FA alone, CPR alone--etc. So if you need all or part, they can help.
Various dates: http://www.firstaidkansas.com/coursedescription.html $45 for Heartsaver First Aid/CPR
--I also contacted an instructor via craigslist to see what they have available.

Also try: http://165.173.10.10/home.asp?qlinks=CP ... Center&C=4
And neat links, NOT for certification, but for reassurance/reminding (http://www.citizencpr.org/learncpr.html). Brief pictures/videos of the FA/CPR stuff you learned and forgot if not used.

***Approach your employer--they very well may pay for a FA/CPR course. It looks good to have "X" number of employees trained in case something happens at their place to one of their employees/customers/clients.

More info later. Keep an eye out. I am open to recommendations/suggestions here folks. This is a Director's posistion, not a Dictator's position. PM me, or post here.

Thanks, Greg

Is the session both classes, or do we choose one date or the other?

Really both nights. It used to be a full 8 hour Saturday, but it is hard for M-F types to give up a good weekend day. So, condensing it slightly, we can make it 2 evenings about 3ish hours each. Thanks Greg

For FA/CPR classes--also check out your local YMCA. Kevin suggested this--easy access and likely cheap.

For anyone on the South side of town the Red Bridge Y has a First Aid/CPR/AED Cert class on June 30th. They sure aren't as cheap as I remember them being though. It's about $150 for both FA/CPR together.

Local hospitals my have classes too. I believe St. Lukes has CPR classes and they are at a nominal fee - I think 30 bucks. Not sure about first aid classes.

Beyond the classes, can you explain the commitment involved with becoming a bike patrol? Also, is it possible to take all the classes but not become an office bike patrol, leaving that option possibly for the future.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris, for details on the patrol, check out the IMBA link above, and the link on the ER site. Otherwise, snag a patroller at one of the local rides, or watering holes after a ride.

If you are interested, come out to one of the local rides (we are going to start being a presence at these, in jerseys, patrolling like we used to), and ride along/talk with us to see what it's like. Another option would be to go to the Trenton race this coming weekend, or July 1st at Landahl. We would love to have you if you are interested. There is no minimum involvement, but if trained, we would sure like you to participate some--be it at regular rides, or events such as races.

We would love to have anyone interested in patrolling in the class. However, our attention/intention is geared toward those who will give back to the patrol. Years ago when we started up, we had some really good deals on Niterider HID lights when they first came out, large hydration packs, etc. We had a lot of people trained initially, then after the free/discounted stuff, many of them simply disappeared. That's true with anything, but when we needed people, many were gone, and nowhere to be found. If you're not really interested, I encourage you to take a FA/CPR course anyway, as you never know when you may need it. You can pick up the mechanical and other portions simply by riding and at classes on your own (i.e. orienteering, bike mechanic, etc.). These will be skills you can use biking anyway, anywhere. With that said, I am not going to have cousin Vinnie hunt you down if you do the course, and are never seen again.
Thanks, and let us know if you're interested! Greg

For a patrol class sooner than the one we will be having, check out JL Cleland in Lawrence. Can't beat it, a patrol class in a bar--Cool!!

I'll be leading a new patroller's training session on Saturday
morning, July 7, 9:00 A.M., at Johnny's Tavern (back room) in
Lawrence (just across the bridge, in north Lawrence). MMBP members
or new recruits are welcome to attend. I'll be happy to certify any
newbies you may have. Just supply me with their names. Of course,
you are welcome to participate and help with the instruction, if
you'd like.

Please give JL your information so that he will know you plan to attend. So I know, please cc me. thanks, and look forward to some more of you becoming patrollers. I am off and may be there for a portion of the class. Plus, get to ride Clinton/Perry/River Trails.

OK, who is interested in particular, and planning to attend??
Please email me directly (or PM, but prefer real email-hardly ever look at PMs much)-- gcummins@kc.rr.com

Classes will be ~6-10 PM, at North Kansas City Hospital, exact rooms yet to be announced. Good, close, safe parking. Difficult to bike to from the South though, as the Paseo Bridge is not yet bike friendly (call me an optimist).

Exact class schedule also will be posted later.
Thanks, Greg

Details, details...

North Kansas Cty Hospital. Map.google.com 2700 Clay Edwards Dr. North Kansas City, MO. Try to be there about 6--we will delay the start a bit if needed to get you there. If it helps, I can make it from NKCH to BuRP trails in 34 minutes at rush hour. I drive ssafe, but fast.

This course and parking is at the extreme south end of the hospital campus. Look for a parking garage at the south end (not the gated one as you come up the west side road, 26th Ave--that is for employees). Go a little further and to the right at the building. Park there and come in the main door to the building on the first floor. There will be a coffee shop/deli to your immediate right (sorry, closed that late--I will have pizza). Take the hallway to your immediate left, first conference room on your left, Antioch Room. If you come in another door on that side, head to the east end of the building, and look for Antioch Room.

I will have pizza, drinks. The agenda will be announced at the class. We will cover the following:
--Introduction to the patrol/history
--Communication
--Responsibilities/Duties/Legal stuff
--Mapreading/Orienteering
--Mechanical-trailside
--Brief Medical pointers
--Riding/Safety

So, come prepared for a cram course. If there is a low turnout, we may condense the two evening course into a slightly longer one evening course. The riding portion will actually be OJT so to speak, at a later date. We will pair you with an experienced patroller for OJT training while riding--though most of you obviously have this part down.

See you all there. My cell is 816-510-1212
