Ft. Collins area, Soapstone Prairie and Blue Sky

Postby mtwmbw » Fri Aug 14, 2015 5:29 pm

Recently returned to the Ft. Collins area for my annual trip. I believe I previously posted some photos and trail report a couple years back from the Red Mountain Open Space. Adjacent to RMOS is The Soapstone Prairie Open Space. Combined they make up 55,000 acres of space 45 minutes north of Ft. Collins, right on the WY border. I have yet to see another trail user there when I visit. They have miles o interconnecting trails. Not necessarily killer single track, but for views and solitude they are hard to beat.

I also hit the Blue Sky trail right outside of FoCo with my daughter.

I may have the opportunity to tag along with a buddy whose son is starting CO State next fall. We'd only have a couple days of FT Collins area riding. Would you recommend taking the MTB or gravel bike? I love these open roads - reminds me of Westcliffe CO area, but wondering how bored I'd be on my single speed if I was to take the 29er.

Thanks!

I used to live in FT. Collins. Depends on what you want to ride, but a lot of the trails I enjoyed would be mtb, though there are several other places you could do on a gravel bike.

Blue Sky Trail lived up to its namesake

Drove up the Poudre Canyon to Dadd Gulch. Liked the more alpine experience, but walk up, ride down. Not recommended, but fun. Blue Sky way more SS friendly.

Urban riding in FC was cool, too. Bikes fuggn everywhere. Cut through this cool Riverbend Ponds Nature area on a sunrise coffee run. Felt like Florida, but cold.
