Not even one year ago, Purrfect Pets, an all-feline, non-profit, no-kill, all volunteer cat shelter, was forced to move from Metcalf South Mall when it closed for redevelopment. After a lot of searching for affordable commercial / retail spaces, they ended up renovating a unit at the Great Mall in Olathe. Now, with helium still in their "grand opening" balloon floating at the front door, they are being forced to move again due to the Great Mall closure. The search is on for an affordable location. They have a fundraiser going at: http://www.gofundme.com/PurrfectPets. Donations can also be made by check or money order sent to the address listed on their web site http://www.purrfectpets.org/, or by check, money order, or cash in person at their location at the Great Mall (East end of the building, across from Faith Journey Church).
Someone not affiliated with the Purrfect Pets but who was disgusted that the mall's owners would encourage them to spend tens of thousands of dollars to renovate even though they knew the mall would be closing, has started a petition to attempt to encourage the mall's owners to stop charging this non-profit humane organization rent through the rest of their stay (end of April), and to also pay back at least a portion of the money that was spent renovating their facility. The petition http://www.thepetitionsite.com/336/108/529/urge-van-trust-real-estate-to-help-their-tenant-purrfect-pets-relocate/ currently has over 53,000 signatures out of a desired 75,000.
Please help this fine organization any way that you see fit: Donations, signing the petition, and sharing both of those with friends, family, and co-workers.
(Disclaimer: I volunteer there once a week. My tasks primarily consist of cleaning, changing litter pans, and making sure all the residents have fresh food and water.)
